چکیده

Recently, hearing aid systems where the left and right ear devices collaborate with one another have received much attention. Apart from supporting natural binaural hearing, such systems hold great potential for improving the intelligibility of speech in the presence of noise through beamforming algorithms. Binaural beamforming for hearing aids requires an exchange of microphone signals between the two devices over a wireless link. This paper studies two problems: which signal to transmit from one ear to the other, and at what bit-rate. The first problem is relevant as modern hearing aids usually contain multiple microphones, and the optimal choice for the signal to be transmitted is not obvious. The second problem is relevant as the capacity of the wireless link is limited by stringent power consumption constraints imposed by the limited battery life of hearing aids.

Effect of quantization on beamforming in binaural hearing aids

We consider a beamforming scheme for binaural hearing aids and analyze the effects of quantization on its performance. A limited bandwidth wireless link is assumed between the binaural hearing aids for communication from one ear to the other ear, where signals are then processed using a generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC). We consider the case where observations are quantized before transmissi...

Performance comparison of binaural beamforming and MWF-based noise reduction algorithms for hearing aids

Noise reduction algorithms in hearing aids are crucial to improve speech understanding in background noise for hearing-impaired persons. For binaural hearing aids multi-microphone algorithms, exploiting signals from both the left and the right hearing aid, are considered to be promising techniques for noise reduction, because in addition to spectral information spatial sound information can be ...

On the Impact of Quantization on Binaural MVDR Beamforming

Multi-microphone noise reduction algorithms in binaural hearing aids which cooperate through a wireless link have the potential to become of great importance in future hearing aid systems. However, limited transmission capacity of such devices necessitates the data compression of signals transmitted from one hearing aid to the contralateral one. In this paper we study the impact of quantization...

Rate-constrained binaural MWF-based noise reduction algorithms

In a binaural hearing aid system, output signals for the left and the right ear are generated by exchanging information between the two hearing aids. A significant noise reduction can be achieved using the binaural multi-channel Wiener filter (MWF), which requires all microphone signals from both hearing aids. However, the limited bandwidth of the binaural link typically does not allow to trans...

Binaural Linearly Constrained Minimum Variance Beamformer for Hearing Aid Applications

In many cases hearing impaired persons suffer from hearing loss in both ears, necessitating two hearing apparatuses. In such cases, the applied speech enhancement algorithms should be capable of preserving the, so called, binaural cues. In this paper, a binaural extension of the linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformer is proposed. The proposed algorithm, denoted binaural linearl...
